1. What versions of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Windows do your add-ins work with?

All our add-ins work with Microsoft Outlook 2002/XP and Microsoft Outlook 2003.

Most of our add-ins also work with Microsoft Outlook 2000, but some add-ins may have limited functionality in Microsoft Outlook 2000. There is a special note on the page of such products. All our products working with Microsoft Outlook 2000 require Microsoft Outlook to be configured for workgroups (see question 2).

All our add-ins can work both in a home network without Microsoft Exchange Server and in corporate networks based on absolutely any version of Microsoft Exchange Server or Microsoft Small Business Server.

For example, if an add-in is supposed to process e-mail folders, it will work with a local folder in exactly the same way as with Microsoft Exchange Server folders.

All our products (if it is not stated otherwise on the product page) work with Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows NT4, as well as with their newer versions, including Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. All our products also work within Windows Terminal Services and Remote Desktop without any limitations.

None of our products require the CDO library (Collaboration Data Objects).

Our Microsoft® Outlook add-ins do NOT work with Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook 97/98 and Microsoft Exchange Client.

2. How do I configure Microsoft Outlook 2000 for workgroups?

Note that for our products to be able to work with Microsoft Outlook 2000, the latter must be configured for corporate mail or workgroups (this configuration allows you to use SMTP/POP3 mail as the main or only one). You can find out your current configuration in the Microsoft Outlook About dialogue box.

If Microsoft Outlook is currently in the Internet mail mode (IMO), you should switch to the corporate mode:

  1. Select Options in the Tools menu.
  2. Select the Mail Services tab in the dialogue box.
  3. Click the Reconfigure mail support button
  4. Select the Corporate or Workgroups mode and follow the instructions of the wizard.
  5. You may be asked to insert the installation CD of Outlook or Office during the reconfiguration.

3. Does the work of your add-ins trigger the security system?

All our add-ins were developed to take into account the security system of Microsoft Outlook and none of them will trigger Microsoft Outlook’s security system. So you will NOT see any messages like “A program is trying to access e-mail addresses stored in Outlook” or “A program is trying to send a message from your name”.

But you should keep in mind that Microsoft modifies its security system from version to version. For example, the security system in some versions of Microsoft Outlook warned the user even when an add-in only tried to get the date of a message. So it is possible that warnings will appear after you update Microsoft Outlook or install a patch. Usually, we get these updates automatically and release new versions of our products within several days. But it is worth mentioning that no such incidents occurred in 2004 or in the first half of 2005.

If you want to get additional information about the security system of Microsoft Outlook or to investigate why there are warnings being displayed (unfortunately, Microsoft Outlook does not give the name of the program that triggered its security system), you can use our free product Advanced Security for Outlook. The help system of this product contains exhaustive information about the security system.

4. Will I get the next version of your add-in if I am a registered user?

5. Where do I download add-ins and their updates?

You can download and try all our add-ins absolutely free of charge. You can download their trial versions from our web site at: www.mapilab.com/download/

The trial versions of our add-ins allow you to try them and get to know their features. After you decide to purchase our product, you will not have to download, install and configure it again. Just enter the registration code in its trial version and all the trial version limitations will be disabled.

6. How do I install add-ins and their updates?

The distribution packages of our add-ins are packed in archive files of the ZIP format so you will have to unpack them before installing any of our add-ins.

The operating systems Windows XP and 2003 have built-in support of the ZIP format and do not require any additional software to be installed in order to work with such archives. Just double-click on the file with a distribution package (for example, the file outlook_nntp.zip) and the archive will open as a regular folder.

The operating systems Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000 require special archive software to be installed on the computer in order to work with ZIP archives. Such programs are called WinZip (http://www.winzip.com/) or CuteZip (http://www.globalscape.com/cutezip). If such a program is installed, a click on a distribution package will start it and you will be able to unpack the distribution files from the archive into the folder you specify on your computer.

There are four files in each distribution package:

  • file_id.diz – a brief description of the program
  • History.txt – a list of modifications for the program version
  • License.rtf – the license agreement
  • setup.exe – add-in installation wizard

To install the add-in, execute the file setup.exe and follow the instructions of the installation wizard. Note the following:

  1. You should close Microsoft Outlook before you start the installation wizard
  2. 2. Each add-in can be installed either «For all users» or «Only for me». You can select the type of installation at the third step of the installation wizard (on the «Customer Information» step). If you select to install it «For all users», the add-in will not be added to «COM Add-ins» and you will not be able to enable/disable it without reinstalling it.

After you finish the installation wizard, start Microsoft Outlook and you will see the “First Start Wizard” that will give you some brief information about the program, where it is located and how to start it. The last step of the wizard offers you the choice either to enter the registration code or start the program in trial mode.

Add-in updates can be installed on top of its previous versions. It will keep all current add-in settings and you will not have to enter the registration code again.

The installation of our add-ins does not require you to restart your computer.

7. How do I know that an add-in is loaded?

Select “Options…” from the “Tools” menu in Microsoft Outlook. In the Options dialog box, switch to the “Other” tab and click the “Advanced options…” button.

Most of our add-ins are in COM add-ins, but some of them (for example, MAPILab Toolbox for Outlook) are Microsoft Outlook extensions.

Click the “COM Add-ins” button in the “Advanced options” dialogue box and you will see the list of installed add-ins. If some add-in is not on the list, close the dialogue box and click the “Extensions…” button. A loaded add-in must not only be in one of the lists, but also be selected in the list.

8. How do I find out the version number of an installed add-in and if there are newer versions available?

You can find out the version number of an installed add-in either in the «About» dialogue box or by clicking «Support Information Link» in «Add and Remove Programs». To do this, open the Add and Remove Programs dialogue box (“Control Panel” \ “Add and Remove Programs”), select the program in the list and click «Support Information».

You can find out the number of the latest version on the “Downloads” page of our site. The list of modifications in your version is available in the «History» section of each product's page.

9. How do I temporarily disable your add-in?

Attention, you can temporarily disable only those add-ins that are installed «Only for Me». It is impossible to temporarily disable add-ins if you selected the «For All users» mode during the installation. You can disable it only by uninstalling it.

Open the list of installed add-ins the way described in question 7, find the necessary add-in and clear the selection. After you click “OK” and close the Options dialogue box, the plug-in will be unloaded. You can enable it in the same way.

The only exception is MAPILab NNTP for Outlook, which consists of two program modules: the NNTP transport protocol and the add-in. If you have NNTP accounts, it is highly recommended not to disable the add-in, because it can cause the transport that serves the accounts to work incorrectly. You can disable MAPILab NNTP for Outlook if you have no newsgroup accounts.

10. How is it possible that I cannot disable your add-in? What are “disabled items”?

You may be at some point be faced with the following situation while trying to enable an add-in: you select the checkbox next to the name of the add-in, close the window, open it again, but the checkbox is not selected.

If you see an error message in this case, it means that Microsoft Outlook tried to load the add-in, but something caused an error during the attempt. In this case you should contact our technical support service.

However, if there is no error message displayed, in most cases it means that the add-in is in the list of “disabled items” and Microsoft Outlook did not even try to load it.

To look through the list of “disabled items”, select “About Microsoft Office Outlook” in the “Help” menu and click the “Disabled Items…” button in the dialog box. Find the add-in in the list, select it and click “Enable”. After that enable it as it is described in questions 7 and 9.

Add-ins menu

Open the help of some installed add-in and see the “Introduction” or “Working with the program” sections to find the description on what control items it adds to the Microsoft Outlook toolbar and menu and under what conditions these items become visible and available.

If there are no described items in the Microsoft Outlook interface, make sure the add-in is loaded (the way it is described in question 5).

14. What is the difference between Microsoft Outlook add-ins, add-ons, plug-ins and Outlook extensions?

Generally, Office add-ins, add-ons and plug-ins mean the same - they are COM-addins for Microsoft Office, which have been a part of Microsoft Office since Office 2000/XP. There are COM-add-ins for Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Outlook and for the most of other Microsoft Office applications.

Outlook extensions are old-style applications which compatible with all versions of Microsoft Outlook. They originated from Microsoft Exchange Client, that is considered to be a predecessor of Microsoft Outlook to a large extent.

Outlook COM-addins and Outlook extensions are run by means of various windows that are opened through "Advanced options" by “COM Add-ins” and "Add-in Manager" buttons correspondingly. To open "Advanced options" in the menu "Tools" click "Options" and go to "Other".
